Portuguese-Brazilian photographer Ana Abrão is showcasing some of her works with the Other Worlds and Kalasha exhibition, which will be on display at the Misericórdia Church in Silves until December 31.
“This is a unique opportunity to explore human diversity and beauty through the lens of photographer and explorer Ana Abrão,” says the Municipality.
“With her sensitive and curious gaze, the photographer travels the world, capturing people’s essence and traditions.”
The exhibition was put together following the publication of the artist’s two books. “Other Worlds” is the outcome of a year-long immersion in Asian culture, whilst “Kalasha” sheds light on the daily routines of the Kalash, a polytheistic community living in the mountains of northern Pakistan.
The collection includes photographs of the books and other works grouped by specific cultural and ethnic themes, providing an enriching and educational visual experience. It aims to celebrate the richness of human diversity and encourage contemplation on the intricate nature of societies and cultures worldwide.
Ana Abrão is a Portuguese-Brazilian artist who has lived in Portugal for 23 years. She graduated in Psychology, completed her PhD in Psychology/IT at the Federal University of Uberlândia in Brazil, and worked as a higher education teacher for several years. She later switched from teaching to professional photography and, more recently, has dedicated herself entirely to independent documentary photography projects and writing.
She currently represents Portugal in international photography competitions, having received several significant awards, and frequently participates in photography exhibitions as a member of national and international juries.
Ana has received the “Excellence” qualification in photographic art from the Photographic Society of America (PSA), as well as “Artist” and “Excellence” from the European Association International Federation of Photographic Art (FIAP). She is the PSA representative in Portugal and curator of the Olhares.com community of photographers.
She recently received Portugal’s 2023 TOP 10 Portrait Photographers and 2023 WORLD TOP 10 Women Photographers awards from the OneEyeland organisation.
Her photography exhibition Outros Mundos, sponsored by the Fundação Oriente in Lisbon, where the first exhibition was held, is currently touring various galleries across the country.
