A couple’s passion for heritage and hospitality transforms an ancient estate into a spiritual sanctuary

Settled high in the Algarve, overlooking the lush expanses of Serra de Monchique, lies Quinta do Tempo, a sanctuary of serenity and a testament to the region’s rich tapestry of history and culture.
At the helm of this idyllic retreat are Laura Duarte and Jorge Albino, a couple whose roots in the Algarve run deep and whose passion for hospitality permeates every corner of the estate.
Laura, a Monchique native, and Jorge, originally from Portimão, have transformed a once abandoned property into a vibrant retreat for travellers seeking a unique, rustic experience.
Their journey began in 2014 when they started the construction works at Quinta do Tempo with the vision of restoring it to its former glory while retaining its original charm and character. The couple’s dedication is evident in their meticulous restoration efforts, particularly the preservation of the estate’s traditional architectural elements.
Quinta do Tempo offers a break from the rapid pace of modern life in the hills. The estate is designed to foster relaxation and peace, where time not only slows but seems to expand.
This tranquil atmosphere is enhanced by the natural beauty surrounding the property: the gentle murmur of a nearby stream, the rustle of leaves under the vast Algarvian sky, and the distant views of the sea, which are best enjoyed lying on the sun lounger under the large linden tree.
For Laura and Jorge, maintaining the integrity of the building was essential. They began with the restoration of the roof, which was falling apart and leaking, and even managed to salvage some of the original clay tiles.
“We made a point of maintaining the typical, traditional design of the building, which gives it its charm, uniqueness, and respect for its history,” explained the owners.
For them, this feature is just as important as making sure guests enjoy their time here to the fullest, whether in their studios or in the garden, lying on the sun loungers, barbecuing, or using the wood oven.
Quinta do Tempo is more than just a place to stay; it is an experience woven into the fabric of the local landscape. The property accommodates up to nine guests across three thoughtfully designed studios named Si, Sá, and Lage.
Each studio blends rustic charm with modern aesthetics, providing a cosy, intimate setting that reflects the region’s traditional styles.
The names of the studios have personal significance, tying back to the family itself. Si and Sá are named after the couple’s children, while Lage represents a fusion of Laura and Jorge’s names – coincidentally it is also the name of a type of flat stone with a stable base in Portuguese, quite fitting given its solid, enduring presence and stunning sea views.
The redesign was a product of Laura’s creativity and Jorge’s craftsmanship, as he works as a carpenter.
But the transformation of Quinta do Tempo extended beyond the buildings to the land itself. Once overrun with wild vegetation, the grounds are now a garden of pomegranate, orange, fig, and apple trees, intermingled with vibrant flowers and shrubs.
“When we arrived, there was a lot to do, but there was also a lot of desire to do it,” recalled Jorge. Laura added: “We had family and friends helping us, clearing the brambles, planting more flowers and trees.”
Laura, who grew up in Monchique and moved to Portimão when she finished high school, missed the proximity to the countryside, so she decided to swap a career in a medical clinic of almost three decades for a business in a completely different area that requires all of her and her husband’s dedication. Although it’s more than a full-time job, they both see their hard work acknowledged by those who visit Quinta do Tempo.
Sustainability is a core principle at Quinta do Tempo. Laura and Jorge are committed to eco-friendly practices, including using a solar water-heating system and implementing comprehensive recycling measures. These efforts are part of a broader commitment to preserve the environment for future generations while offering guests a guilt-free stay.
The couple also takes great pride in curating personalised experiences for their guests, from recommending local hiking trails to organising horse-riding sessions or visits to the nearby thermal baths at Termas de Monchique.
Their deep local knowledge and willingness to go the extra mile ensure that every guest has a memorable stay. Quinta do Tempo also serves as a cultural bridge, connecting guests from around the world with the unique heritage of the Algarve.
Visitors from France, Switzerland, Germany, the Netherlands, Greece, Turkey, Israel, or the US find common ground in their appreciation for the tranquillity and beauty offered at Quinta do Tempo.
The feedback from guests is overwhelmingly positive, often highlighting the personal touches and the genuine warmth of the hosts.
“The last few years have been tough but good; we put our heart and soul into our work. We always leave our customers a little welcome treat, like a cake or a typical drink, and everything has been going very well,” agree the owners, who can’t hide their happiness at what they have achieved. “Our hearts are full when people leave here happy that we were able to give them the quiet and tranquillity they were looking for,” they concluded.
The guests are often as thoughtful as their hosts, leaving behind souvenirs, which range from small country symbols to handmade gifts, enriching the tapestry of memories that define Quinta do Tempo.
