Nestled between the hills and the coast, Monte Santo Estevão offers a serene escape in the heart of the Algarve.
Located on the outskirts of Silves, this rural tourism destination is perfect for those looking to unwind in the peace and tranquillity of the countryside, whether for a family holiday, a getaway with friends, or even a corporate retreat.
Upon arrival, it’s clear that tranquillity is at the core of Monte Santo Estevão. The sense of peace is immediate, enhanced by the proximity to nature and the local community. Guests can immerse themselves in authentic Algarve life, visiting nearby shops for fresh fish and vegetables, exploring the surrounding countryside on foot, taking trips to the Arade dam, and even gastronomic routes.
“A dream come true” for Sérgio Costa, a native of Silves, and his wife Vera Luz, Monte Santo Estevão is a labour of love. Once owned by his paternal grandparents, the land had fallen into disrepair and was overgrown with weeds. “We wanted to bring the countryside to life and show that the Algarve is not just sun and beaches,” Sérgio says.
In 2003, he began clearing the land and rebuilding the family home where he used to play with his brother Luís, with plans to build a house for his own permanent residence. Although it never became the family’s full-time home – it wasn’t until the pandemic that it became a true sanctuary for Sérgio, Vera, and their children – the property would go on to serve as a space for family holidays and special events. In 2011, the couple decided to share the property with visitors, and Monte Santo Estevão was born, named after the area where the estate is located.

The estate invites guests to experience the Algarve in a way that contrasts with the region’s signature coastal offerings. In winter, the cosy living room, complete with a large fireplace, offers an intimate and warm atmosphere. During the summer months, the Finnish gutter swimming pool, which overflows to create the illusion of infinity, becomes a highlight. It’s an ideal spot to cool off or simply relax on the sun loungers whilst soaking in the surrounding views.
As part of their commitment to preserving the heritage of the land, Sérgio and Vera made the decision to retain three centenary trees on the property: an olive tree and two carob trees. The largest of the carob trees, which stands as the “heart of the space”, became a symbol of the property, even inspiring the logo.

Naturally, the couple, who have an intimate knowledge of the house and its grounds, continue to oversee the daily management of the property. They handle bookings, ensure a high level of personal service, and go above and beyond to accommodate guests’ needs, whether that means arranging car hire, transfers, or a private chef.
“Each client is unique, so we try to make sure that everyone feels at home by personalising their experience,” the couple explains. This attention to detail has made Monte Santo Estevão a favourite for many, with some guests returning year after year, forming lasting bonds not only with the owners but also with the local community.
Guests are given the freedom to choose between a fully independent stay with self-check-in or a more personalised experience with regular contact from the owners.

Once their booking is confirmed, they receive a promotional video and the exact location of the property. Upon arrival, a warm welcome awaits, often in the form of locally produced treats such as wine or cakes. “We maintain direct communication with our guests, always ready to assist with anything they need and offer additional services if required,” says Sérgio.

The property is designed to accommodate up to eight guests (with the possibility of adding two more), with two bedrooms on the ground floor, a suite, and another above the living room. The house has also been adapted for guests with reduced mobility, ensuring everyone can enjoy the space.
Whether for family gatherings, corporate team-building events, or simple getaways, the extensive outdoor area provides ample space for children to play and for activities like yoga, Pilates, and meditation.

The house’s layout has been carefully planned. The kitchen is fully equipped, and there are two dining areas: one inside in the spacious yet cosy living room with a fireplace, and another outside for al fresco dining, perfect for barbecues. The outdoor space also offers a spectacular view, where guests can watch the sunset over the mountains during golden hour. On warm days, an outdoor shower near the pool provides a refreshing way to cool down or to wash off the sand after a day at the beach.

In addition to the pool area, there’s a small table by the garden, ideal for breakfast, a snack, or a glass of wine in the evening. The garden itself is a burst of colour, with various private areas for relaxation. “We’ve tried to create different environments where guests can enjoy different meals or spend time in different settings,” Vera explains. There’s also a covered terrace, perfect for outdoor dining, with beautiful views of the mountains and car parking inside the property.

The décor is minimalist yet elegant, blending rustic charm with contemporary comfort. Vera, who is passionate about design, has chosen natural materials such as wood and straw, alongside plants and traditional Algarvian elements.
The result is a harmonious space that feels both modern and deeply connected to the surrounding landscape. Small touches – such as the blue stripes around the windows and doors and the outdoor lamps made from traditional baskets – pay homage to the region’s cultural heritage, whilst pastel tones throughout the house create a calming atmosphere.

Striving to present a dynamic and innovative space, Vera makes slight adjustments to the décor every year, from updating the curtains to changing the artwork or adding new decorative pieces.
“We want our guests to feel at home,” she says. The couple, who live in Faro, met in secondary school in Silves and later studied at the University of the Algarve. They have been working together for a few years, combining their skills and creativity to transform this “successful and constantly evolving project”.
Looking ahead, they plan to add a heated swimming pool and upgrade other facilities to continue offering guests a top-quality experience.
