The evolving journey of the Cadela Carlota animal shelter

A sanctuary of hope

Since 2008, Cadela Carlota has been a refuge for abandoned dogs and cats in Lagos. “Our mission is to provide safety, care, and love to animals that have been mistreated, neglected, or left behind. Some animals find forever homes, whilst others, due to age or illness, remain in our care for life,” explains Ruth Gomes, president of the Cadela Carlota animal shelter.

“Our dedicated volunteers and staff offer food, medical care, and rehabilitation, helping each animal regain trust and hope. Every adoption is a victory, but all animals at Cadela Carlota are valued and loved, regardless of their circumstances.”

Cadela Carlota’s journey has been one of resilience, community spirit, and determination. As Ruth explains, the shelter initially operated on rented land and faced uncertainty.

“In late 2023, a remarkable milestone was achieved – the purchase of the 1.8-hectare plot that now serves as a permanent sanctuary. The ‘Own the Landcampaign made this possible through generous donations, charity events, and community support,” she recalls.

“Owning the land ensures stability, allowing Cadela Carlota to expand and meet new challenges.”

“Our next goal is a dedicated cat shelter. The facility we currently use for cats will be redeveloped by the city of Lagos, requiring relocation,” Ruth explains. “Unfortunately, the building City Hall have offered as a replacement is unsuitable and we plan to build a new cat facility on our existing land.”

Ruth reveals the project will be completed in two phases. “Phase 1 will construct a metal structure for up to 100 cats, featuring indoor and outdoor spaces, plus quarantine areas. Phase 2 will create a sanctuary for feral cats.

Phase 1 requires €75,000 in funding, and all support is welcome and needed to make it a reality.”

How you can help

Like many shelters, Cadela Carlota relies on human kindness to make what they do possible and there are many ways one can help.

“Fostering provides a temporary, safe space for animals before they find permanent homes,” Ruth highlights. “Adoption offers a second chance to animals who have been abandoned. By adopting, individuals reduce the number of homeless animals and give a deserving pet a loving home.”

Volunteering is also a great way to help as Cadela Carlota relies on volunteers “for daily care, organising fundraising events, assisting with adoptions, and running charity shops.

Every hour spent volunteering directly benefits the animals and strengthens shelter operations”, Ruth stresses.

Naturally, financial support is crucial for shelter maintenance and projects like the new cat facility.

“Donations help cover medical expenses, food, and shelter upkeep. Monthly sponsorships, one-time gifts, and in-kind donations of food and supplies all make a difference,” Ruth says.

Cadela Carlota also raises funds through market stalls, pop-up cafés, and partnerships with local businesses. “These events provide vital funding whilst spreading awareness about our work. If you’re a business owner looking to collaborate, your support can make a meaningful impact.”

The shelter is also an active part of the Algarve community. “You’ll often find us at local markets, fairs, and fundraising events. These gatherings offer an opportunity to meet the team, learn more about our work, and discover ways to get involved.”

Ruth points out how important community support has been to the success of Cadela Carlota, and leaves a message to all who have worked with them or supported the shelter: “None of this would be possible without the kindness and generosity of our supporters. Whether you have adopted, fostered, volunteered, donated, or helped spread the word, your efforts have made a real difference.

Every act of support, big or small, contributes to a brighter future for the animals in our care.

To all our volunteers, donors, and community partners, thank you. Your compassion and dedication ensure that Cadela Carlota can continue its vital work.”

As the warmer months approach Cadela Carlota is adjusting their dog-walking schedule to ensure the dogs can enjoy their walks during cooler hours, so Ruth advises visitors and volunteers to check their website and social media for updated timings.

Cadela Carlota is more than a shelter – it’s a movement of compassion, dedication, and hope. “Every person who donates, fosters, volunteers, or adopts plays a crucial role in changing lives,” Ruth says.

“Together, we can continue building a world where every animal has a chance at a better life,” she says.
