A renovation project has begun at the iconic Santa Catarina Fortress gardens in Praia da Rocha
– April 23, 2025

The municipal council of Portimão has announced the start of renovations on the gardens located next to the fortress overlooking Praia da Rocha. These gardens offer visitors stunning views of the popular beach and provide a rare green refuge in an otherwise urbanised tourism hotspot.
The renovation project is being carried out by Master Natura – Gestão de Espaços Verdes, which won a public tender for the works. The goal is to transform the garden into a shining example of what a green space should be.

Renovations will recreate iconic areas of the garden, including the lookout point over the cliffs and access routes. Contemporary elements such as weathering steel railings, modern public lighting, and new urban furniture will be introduced, designed to harmonise with the existing stone walls, stairways, and benches, according to the municipal council.
Known for its history, location, and breathtaking views, the Santa Catarina Fortress garden is one of the most emblematic landmarks in Praia da Rocha.
As part of the revitalisation, Mediterranean plant species will be introduced, along with other features that reflect the Algarve’s cultural landscape while preserving the garden’s original character.
The works, expected to last seven months, are described by the local authority as part of its “commitment to preserving and enhancing this unique space.”
